The .KE registry is a closed registry
offering Domain Registration services to persons or organizations
with local presence in Kenya.
Domain & Entity Registration
Rights:
Domain Registration is not open to all
on the KENIC system. Once a USERID has been registered,
Registrants interested with Registering domains and entities
will be required to enter into an Agreement with KENIC.
On completion of the MoU agreement,
the USERID will be assigned with Domain & Entity
Registration Rights. (Registrar Rights)
Entity (Owner-ID)
The Entity is the Registrants (Domain
Owners) details. If the Registrant had not created an
Entity previously, an option to create an Entity is provided.
The Entity requires
the following
Entity Name:
This is also same as the Company or Organization name of the Domain Owner
(Not of the Registrar)
Responsible (Entity's Authoritative
Contact Person):
This is the name of the Person that is responsible of Domain Issues for
the Entity. in Most cases IT Managers or System Administrators of the
Entity
Address: - This is
the physical address of the Entity
Number: - Block Number,
Plot number or Building Number.
Compliment: Specifics
of the office location e.g.: 10th floor or Room 120
Zip Code: Postal Zip
Code
City: Name of your
City e.g.: Nairobi, Mombasa, Sao Paulo etc.
State: State is KE
since there are no state definitions in Kenya.
Those outside Kenya should enter their states respectively.
Country: Your Current
Country (select from pull down menu)
Country Code :- Enter
the designated Calling Country Code e.g. 254 for Kenya
Area Code:- Enter the
designated Calling Area Code e.g. 020 for Nairobi
Telephone Number:- Enter
the Entities telephone number Extension Respectively.
Administrative Entity ID:-
Every Entity requires an Administrative Entity ID. This ID is same as
the USERID mentioned above. However, The Administrative Entity ID has
overall rights for the Entity and domain. Only the Administrative Entity
ID can change the other contacts for that domain e.g.: Domain Administrative
Contact ID,The Technical Contact ID and the Billing Contact ID.
This is also included registration of
domain names under the Entity ID (Owner-ID) created.
Examples:- If registering
a domain on behalf of a Registrant (Domain Owner), the
Registrar needs to
enter Its USERID as the Administrative Entity ID of the domain.
If the Registrant (Domain Owner) registers
the domain directly without the assistance of the Registrar,
The Registrant should enter their USERID as the Administrative
Entity ID.
Administrative Entity Contact
The Administrative Entity Contact is
the entities (Owners) contact or Responsible person with
Administrative Authority at the entity.
The Administrative Entity Contact has the overall administrative control
rights on a domain name in the KENIC system.
If a Registrar creates an Entity on
behalf of a Registrant, its the responsibility of the
Registrant to make sure that the Registrar re-delegates
the Administrative Entity ID back to the Registrant.
Domain Administrative Contact:
The Domain's Administrative Contact
is the person to be contacted on Administrative matters
affecting the domain. The Registrar of the domain will
be assumed as the Domains Administrative Contact. This
registrar should also be the Administrative Entity Contact
ID else rights to create a domain for the entity (Owner-ID)
will be denied.
Domain Technical Contact ID
This should be the USERID of the Technical
Contact of the domain
Technical Contact is the Person to be contacted on Technical matters
affecting the domain. It is recommended that the Technical ID be that
of the ISP hosting the Domain or that of the Registrar.
Please note that the Technical Contact
can only change the DNS Servers of the Domain.
Domain Billing Contact ID
This should be the USERID of the Billing
Contact of the domain
The Billing Contact is the Person to be contacted on Billing matters
of the domain. It is recommended that the Billing Contact ID be that
of the Registrar or the person at the Entity that handles accounting
or financial matters.
Making the Billing contact ID that of
the Registrar or ISP will reduce the number of different
organizations the Entity will deal with when making
payments.
Please note that all above mentioned
ID's should be registered using the User ID registration
form.
Administrative Entity Contact
The Administrative Entity Contact is
the entities (Owners) contact or Responsible person with
Administrative Authority at the entity.
The Administrative Entity Contact has the overall administrative control
rights on a domain name in the KENIC system.
If a Registrar creates an Entity on
behalf of a Registrant, its the responsibility of the
Registrant to make sure that the Registrar re-delegates
the Administrative Entity ID back to the Registrant.
Supporting Documents:
Some of the Domain name extensions require
supporting documents in order for them to be registered.
These are:
go.ke:
This domain requires supporting documents from the Department of Government
IT Service at the Ministry of Finance. They should give an Authority
letter to show that the Entity is a valid Government institution or
Agency and authorized to register the domain name.
ac.ke:
KENIC will require a Registration Certificate as supporting documents
from the Ministry of Education Science and Technology in the name of
the Entity. The Registration Certificate should classify the Entity
as a University or College academic.
sc.ke:
Will also require a Registration Certificate as supporting documents
from the Ministry of Education Science and Technology in the name of
the Entity. The Registration Certificate should classify the Entity
as a Kindergarten, Primary or Secondary Academic.
All domains that require supporting
documents will generate a ticket that will only be closed
by the KENIC Registry Services once the Supporting Documents
have been received. Only when the Ticket is closed will
the domain be published.
Billing Cycle:
The KENIC billing cycle is on a 12
month basis (annual) for any domain name registration or
renewal fee which shall be referred to as a Maintenance
fee. All Maintenance Fees are subject to VAT.
New Domain Invoicing:
New Domains will be Invoiced once the
Registration ticket has been closed. An Email with the
Domain Invoice details will be sent to the Billing Contact.
A URL link will be availed to enable Printout of the
Invoice. The Invoice is payable (Due Date) within 2 weeks
of the Registration. Payment Reminders will be sent to
Billing and Administrative Contacts after Due Date for
an additional 2 months after which the domain will be
Suspended.
Domain Renewals:
Existing Domains will receive a Renewal
fee Invoice three months to the Expiry Date. The Invoice
is payable (Due Date) within 20 days. Two email Reminders
will be sent to Billing and Administrative Contact after
the Due Date within an additional 2 Months Period.
If payments are not received after this period the domain will be Suspended.
Suspended Domains:
Domain names that have not been paid
for within the set Billing Cycle will be Suspended but
maintained in the database for an additional 180 days.
If a domain is not reclaimed within this period, it will
be quarantined for 3 months after which the name will
be released back into the pool for re-registration.
Change of Administrative Entity Contact ID:
The Administrative Entity ID has overall
rights to the Entity and the domains owned by the Entity.
A change to of the Administrative Entity Contact ID would
effect all domains registered or
owned by the Entity. To control the security issues that may arise out
of such a change, Only;
a) The Administrative Entity Contact
ID can change or transfer the USERID to another USERID.
b) An will facilitate the transfer of the Administrative Entity Contact
ID.
The Off-line procedure requires Required
Transfer Documents for the Entity to be submitted. Also
required are Identification documents for the Administrative
authority. The Administrative authority is the Responsible
contact person at the Entity. The Identification Document
could be Either a passport or an ID card number.
Please complete the Transfer Administrative
Entity Contact ID. form.
Transfer of Domain Administrative
Contact ID:
Transfer of the Domain Administrative
Contact is an Online process.
The current Domain Administrative Contact has an option
to resign his post and transfer the
functions to the Administrative Entity Contact ID.
The Administrative Entity ID has the rights to change the Domain Administrative
Contact ID from the online interface.
Transfer of Domain Technical Contact ID:
Transfer of the domain technical contact
is an online process. The current Domain Technical Contact
can be changed by:
a) The Domain Administrative Contact
ID has rights to change the Technical Contact ID from
the online interface.
b) The Administrative Entity Contact
ID has rights to change the Technical Contact ID for
the Domain via the online interface.
c) The Technical contact ID has an option
to resign and transfer the technical contact to Entity's
Admin Contact ID.
Option (c) is applicable only when the Domain Tech Contact ID is not
same as Administrative Entity Contact ID.
Transfer of Domain Billing Contact ID:
Transfer of the Domain Billing contact
ID is an online process.
The current Domain Billing Contact can be changed by:
a) The Domain Administrative Contact
can change the Billing Contact ID from the online interface.
b) The Administrative Entity Contact ID can change the Billing Contact
ID for the Domain via the online interface.
c) The Billing contact ID has an option to resign and
transfer the billing contact to Entity's Admin. Contact
ID. Option (c) is applicable only when the Domain Billing
Contact ID is not same as Entity Admin Contact ID.
Domain Transfer to New Entity:
To improve on the security of the Entity
Transfer process, it has been deemed necessary to process
off-line. The transfer process requires, Required Transfer
Documents for the Entity and Identification documents
for the Administrative authority of the entity.
The Administrative authority is the Responsible contact person at the
Entity.
The Identification Document could be Either a passport or an ID card
number.
Please complete the Domain Transfer to New Entity form.
Change of Domain DNS Delegation:
The change of the domain DNS delegation
servers is processed online. Three out of the four Contacts
ID of a Domain can change the domain DNS delegation servers.
These are:
a) Administrative Entity Contact ID.
b) Domain Administrative contact ID.
c) Domain Technical Contact ID.
Domain Deletion:
To reduce the abuse of domain registrations,
registered domains CANNOT be deleted online.
The offline process requires Required
Transfer Documents: for the Entity and Identification
documents for the Administrative authority of the entity
The Administrative authority is the Responsible contact
person at the Entity.
The Identification Document could be
Either a passport or an ID card number. Please complete
the Domain Removal form.
The Expired Domains process is an alternative
way to remove a registered domain name from the Registry
database.
User Identification Cancellation
The system does not allow for User ID
Cancellations.
An Inactive or unused ID will however be removed automatically by the
system after a preset period.
REQUIRED TRANSFER DOCUMENTS
The following documents are required
for transfer procedures only.
For Domains under the classification
of .co.ke, .ne.ke and .or.ke, a Registration Certificate
from the Registrar of Companies, a Certificate of Inc
or-operation or an equivalent.
Individuals or Persons (non-entities)
who register domains under the above mentioned criteria
will require to submit Copies of their Personal Identification
Numbers or an equivalent.
The Domains under the classification
of .ac.ke and .sc.ke will require a Registration Certificate
from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
GO.KE domains require a Registration
Authorization Letter from the Director, Government IT
Services (Ministry of Finance).
Forgotten User ID Password?
If you have forgotten your User ID password,
attempt to logon using your user ID. When the system
detects the incorrect password, a "REMIND"
option is provided.
Selecting the "REMIND" option
will prompt the system to send the User ID an email
with the "Reminder Phrase".
Please follow the instructions of the
email received if the "Reminder Phrase" does
not help.
